Part 9 - Three Toms and Rolls

This section contains the first exercises containing snare drum rolls. After looking at rolls we then add a third tom tom to the drum kit before looking at two beat fills and then covering how multiple bars rest are notated. We then look at some double strokes around the kit before finishing up as usual with a study.

    Part 10 - Ride Cymbal and Cut Common

    This part introduces the ride cymbal to the drum kit, then goes on to look at a new rhythmical figure, the dotted quaver-semiquaver. We then look at the wood block before moving on to ruffs and cut common time.

    Part 11 - Swing Rhythms

    This part contains our first look at the swing rhythm before moving onto groups of two semiquavers. We then look at the cowbell and five stroke roll, and then move onto playing dotted quaver-semiquaver rhythms around the drum kit. It is sometimes necessary to have gradual tempo changes in a piece of music, and the notation for this is covered next. Finally, we look at a shorthand notation for writing quavers and semiquavers.

    This section looks at playing the hi hat with the foot (without hitting it with a stick) and then goes on to look at the nine stroke roll, and the bossa nova rhythm.
